Brandon’s Brush with Future Stardom, He May Become Guitar’s Newly-Anointed Great OneBrandon Lee Adams has been branded by no less than Tony Rice himself as someone with chops that he thinks might rival his own.  Yet, as Brandon told me, he didn't say Adams is the next Tony Rice. Instead, he likes to play with Brandon because he has a distinctive style of his own. Don’t get much better than that. And, Brandon proves worthy of praise each night he leaves his country farmstead to grace a stage someplace with his virtuosic, melodic, and lightning-speed guitar playing and deep, rich country voice. No Depression

During a recent Pacific Northwest tour, Kentucky-based singer-songwriter and bluegrass guitarist Brandon Lee Adams stopped by the Fretboard Journal. We were expecting some flatpicking instrumentals and perhaps a song or two from his Hardest Kind of Memories album. But Adams threw us a curveball and let us hear his transcendent cover of Randy Newman’s “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today.” On this track, Adams put his cherished Martin guitar aside to try out a new D-18 built by the Pre-war Guitars company. Fretboard Journal

Not long ago, I was discussing the future of country music with a good friend who’s been playing it for more than 40 years.  My concern was the greats we’d been listening to for most of our lives were departing, and that the stuff coming out of Nashville these days for the most part is a long way from Hank Williams and Bill Monroe.  My friend said, “No, they’re out there.  You won’t hear them on the radio, but they’re out there.” Brandon Lee Adams is proof my friend was right.  If his debut indie album, Hardest Kind of Memories is any indication, Brandon is someone who is intent on carrying on the bluegrass tradition.  Not only is he an astonishingly good flat picker, he’s a natural from the heart singer and his songs, all original (with the exception of a Bill Monroe instrumental, “Road To Columbus”) echo the greats from the Stanley Brothers to Hank Williams as well a host of guitarists from his hero Tony Rice (who joins him on a track, which says something about Brandon’s talents right there) to touches of Doc Watson and Norman Blake.
